Macy Gray

She's everywhere promoting her new single "Still" and her album "On How Life Is" (highly recommended). So instead of you reading all the endless interviews, I have and found the best quotes, and she's worth listening to:

In Heat on her celebrity aspirations
"You figure that if you are successful, then maybe people will like you. You look at al the celebrities on TV and everybody likes them. It sort of fixes it. Well, the first thing you find out is that it doesn't. You're still the same. You're still gonna be a nerd. Nothings gonna change that. You're a nerd at eight, you'll be a nerd at 25...I'M JUST KINDA GOOFY. They way I think is odd. I like freaky shit. At the same time, I've always wanted to fit in. It might be cool to be Britney Spears. She's right in the pop. But I wouldn't wanna be her. That might get boring after a while."

In the Big Issue on her traumatic experiences at school
"When I was little, I had this really funny voice. Every time I talked the kids would make fun of me, so I stopped talking. Everybody thought I was shy, but really I was self-concious of my voice. So I used to write all the time. If I wanted to say something to somebody, rather than say it out, I'd write them a letter. At school I used to write letters in class, sitting at the back, rather than actually listening to what the teacher was saying. I always had a pad and pen on me. Still do."

On the Launch website on her music
"I'm not doing what a lot of other R'n'B acts are doing. My music is like back-in-the-day-soul music. Its mixed with jazz, hip-hop and a little rock. After I moved to los Angeles, I was gigging in the coffee houses...The best thing about where I am in my career is that I am finally doing my own thing."

In Time Out on dealing with men
"I'm not sure how to deal with men yet, that's one thing I haven't figured out. Being a girl, its like...The way I was raised to be aggressive, to go out and have initiative. So then you hook up with a guy, and he's taught to be bigger and better than you are. Well, a lot of times. So it just fucks everything up, because you don't want to emasculate anybody, but you've got to do the things you've got to do at the same time."

In Marie Claire on how music became her profession
"I wanted to be a writer because its something I've always been good at, and I wanted to live in Los Angeles because in the movies, everything looked glamourous. Then I met this guy who had a heap of songs that he had no lyrics for and he thought I could help him out. I never took it seriously. I was broke and it was $100 a time so I said 'yes'. It beat working in a photocopying centre."

In Sky magazine on the reality of life in Los Angeles
"It took me a long time to adjust. It's a bit of a chi-chi place-everyone's stuck on what you've got and who you know. Andthere are lots of people who are waiting tables but saying they're movie directors. Lots of wannabes. I guess I was a wannabe too. Still am."
